Life, Light and Voice

Life, Light and Voice

Jesus offers more than life improvement; he gives us true life, living water, light in darkness, and the voice of the Good Shepherd calling us by name. When we listen to his voice above every other voice, we find provision, identity, protection, and an abundant life in his presence.

Sermon outline

Jesus is the source of true life, the light that helps us see clearly, and the Good Shepherd whose voice leads us into abundant life.

1. Jesus Gives True Life

Texts: John 7:37–38; Hebrews 11:24–27

  • Life is not defined by job, marriage, money, status, comfort, or outward success.
  • The things we hold onto can shape our identity without us realizing it.
  • Jesus does not simply modify our old life; he gives us a new one.
  • Like Moses, disciples are called to value Christ above the temporary pleasures and treasures of the world.
  • Even when life is difficult, we can say: “I have Jesus.”

Key point: True life is not measured by what we have, but by who we have.

2. Jesus Is the Living Water

Text: John 7:37–38

  • At the Festival of Tabernacles, Jesus stands and invites the thirsty to come to him and drink.
  • The people were remembering God’s provision of water in the wilderness, but Jesus reveals himself as the true source.
  • Only Jesus can satisfy the deep thirst of the soul.
  • Living water flows from within those who believe in him.

Key point: No earthly source can quench our thirst like Jesus can.

3. Jesus Is the Light of the World

Texts: John 8:12; John 9:1–12

  • Darkness represents spiritual blindness, discouragement, fear, and distorted perspective.
  • Jesus brings light into dark situations and helps us see life rightly.
  • The man born blind shows that not every struggle is the result of sin; sometimes God wants his works to be displayed.
  • Jesus does not just repair what is broken; he creates what did not exist before.
  • When Jesus transforms someone, others may not immediately recognize the change because they are still looking at the outside.

Key point: Only the light of Christ allows us to see ourselves, our struggles, and our lives clearly.

4. Jesus Is the Voice We Must Follow

Text: John 10:1–10

  • Sheep know the voice of their shepherd and will not follow a stranger.
  • Many voices compete for our attention: success, fear, approval, money, comparison, and the world’s expectations.
  • Jesus calls his sheep by name, not only with authority but with relationship and invitation.
  • His voice brings comfort, identity, direction, and life.

Key point: The voice of Christ should be the voice that matters most.

5. Jesus Is the Good Shepherd

Text: John 10:11–18

  • Jesus is not a hired hand who runs when danger comes.
  • The Good Shepherd protects, provides, stays, and sacrifices.
  • Jesus lays down his life willingly for the sheep.
  • The cross is the greatest proof of his love and care.
  • In his presence, we find pasture, provision, belonging, and abundant life.

Key point: The Good Shepherd gives his life so that we may have life to the full.

Communion Reflection

The bread and the cup remind us that Jesus laid down his life for his sheep. His sacrifice gives us life, his light helps us see, and his voice calls us back into relationship with God.
