Jesus and the Spirit

Jesus and The Holy Spirit

God’s Spirit isn’t a distant concept—it’s the breath of God in you, giving new life, restoring your identity, and shaping you into the likeness of Jesus. Even in wilderness seasons, the Spirit isn’t punishing you; He’s forming you—so you can live with freedom, not condemnation.

This message invites us to:

  • Reconsider what it means to be “led by the Spirit”
  • Recognize wilderness seasons as places of formation, not failure
  • Learn how to walk with one another when faith is tested, not tidy

Rather than assuming someone is weak when they struggle, we’re challenged to ask: What might the Spirit be forming in them right now?

Sermon outline

Breath You Don’t Notice (But Can’t Live Without)

Hook: You don’t think about breathing… until someone mentions it.

  • We breathe ~20,000–25,000 times a day
  • Breath is invisible but essential

Bridge: Scripture often describes God’s Spirit as breath / wind (ruach).

  • God’s breath hovered over creation
  • God’s breath gave life to humanity
  • God’s breath is in Scripture (“God-breathed”)

Application: If the Spirit is “breath,” don’t live spiritually breathless.

The Spirit Brings New Beginnings

Jesus Conceived and Born by the Spirit (Luke 1)

  • Mary’s question: “How will this be?”
  • Answer: Holy Spirit will come upon her; God overshadows her

Point: The Spirit launches God’s new work in the world through Jesus.

We Are Also Born of the Spirit (John 3, Titus 3)

  • “Born of water and Spirit”
  • “Washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit”

Point: Christianity isn’t self-improvement; it’s new creation.

Action step: Name one area where you’ve been acting like change depends on you alone—then surrender it.

The Spirit Gives Identity and Belonging

Jesus Baptized and Affirmed (Luke 3)

  • Spirit descends like a dove

  • God’s voice: “You are my Son… I am pleased.”

Key emphasis from the sermon: Baptism isn’t only about cleansing—it’s also commissioning and belonging.

Our Baptism: Forgiven + Gifted + Adopted (Acts 2, Romans 8, Ephesians 1)

  • Forgiveness of sins
  • Gift of the Holy Spirit
  • “Spirit of adoption… Abba Father”
  • Spirit as a “deposit/guarantee” of inheritance

Pastoral turn: When you fail, Satan aims to steal your dignity. God restores it by grace.

Action step: This week, replace self-accusation with a sentence:

“In Christ, I’m still God’s child, and His Spirit is still in me.”

The Spirit Shapes Us Through Wilderness Seasons

Jesus Led by the Spirit Into the Wilderness (Luke 4)

  • Important: Spirit-led doesn’t mean pain-free
  • Wilderness can refine, mature, and clarify mission

Maturity Through Struggle (Hebrews 5, Romans 8:28–29)

  • “He learned obedience through what he suffered”
  • “Conformed to the image of His Son”

Point: The “good” God works is often you becoming like Jesus, not you getting everything you want.

Action step: Identify your current “wilderness” and ask:

  • “What is God forming in me here?”
  • “What is being stripped away?”
  • “What dependence is being learned?”

The Spirit Transforms and Empowers Everyday Life

Spirit-Filled Ministry (Luke theme → Acts theme)

  • Luke highlights the Spirit repeatedly: Jesus’ life and the church’s life

reedom and Transformation (2 Corinthians 3, Romans 8)

  • “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”
  • “From one degree of glory to another” (slow, real change)
  • “Same Spirit who raised Jesus lives in you”

Point: The Spirit doesn’t just prepare you for heaven—He brings life into your life now.

Action step: Read Romans 8 this week. Don’t study it like homework—read it like oxygen.

No Condemnation

A) Romans 7 → Romans 8

  • “Who will rescue me?” → “Thanks be to God…”
  • “There is now no condemnation…”

B) The Woman Caught in Adultery (John 8)

  • “Neither do I condemn you… go and leave your life of sin.”

Point: Grace doesn’t excuse sin; it restores dignity and calls you forward.
