Matthew 5: 1-10
What does it mean to be pure in spirit? We can sense when there is a poverty of spirit, these are the hearts that God blesses. If we are a disciple of Jesus does this describes who we are? Am I a good citizen in God’s kingdom? Sometimes it’s hard for us to admit that there is a poverty in us. These are people who are acknowledging their spiritual state before God. We are in a state of spiritual bankruptcy. If we mourn the state of our spiritual life we will get God’s attention. God words are there and is meant to be obeyed. Meekness is not weakness. Meekness is desiring other people’s interest above our own. Even when others hurts us we have to still want the best for them.
What does it mean to hunger and thirst? This is the person who is focused on pleasing God. To crave righteousness is not to be satisfied with where we are at spiritually but rather to continue to pursue God. What is mercy? We are extending ourselves to others who don’t deserve it. How merciful are we as disciples? Are we helpful or callous? What do we think about when we are by ourselves? What do we want most in this world? How pure is our heart? Even in the church our hearts are blackened by impure thoughts. Are we at peace with everyone as far as it depends on us? Are you a peace avoider? If we are not being persecuted for the cause of Christ but for things that we do, then we are not living our lives to bring glory to God.
