The Community of Jesus

“The Community of Jesus” highlights that following Christ was never meant to be a solo journey. In Matthew 18–20, Jesus models humility, teaches the cost of discipleship, and reveals the beauty of a community shaped by grace. Believers are called to depend on God and one another—to serve, forgive, and protect the vulnerable. Just as the rich young ruler was invited to trade comfort for devotion, Jesus invites each person to surrender pride and selfishness for something far greater: a family of faith. In God’s community, the last are first, the humble are lifted up, and everyone is loved equally.

Sermon outline

1. The Heart of Community (Matthew 18:1–4)

  • Greatness in God’s kingdom begins with humility.
  • Jesus calls us to become like little children—dependent, teachable, and trusting.
  • Pride isolates, but humility builds connection.

2. Protecting the Vulnerable (Matthew 18:6–9)

  • Every believer, especially new disciples, matters deeply to God.
  • We must guard our actions and attitudes so we do not cause others to stumble.
  • Cutting off sin is not a slow process—it’s a decision to remove anything that separates us from Christ.

3. The Cost of Following Jesus (Matthew 19:16–30)

  • The rich young ruler valued possessions over devotion.
  • True discipleship costs everything—but God’s reward is eternal life.
  • Sacrifice reveals what (or who) truly holds our hearts.

4. God’s Generous Grace (Matthew 20:1–16)

  • The parable of the vineyard workers reminds us that God’s grace is not earned—it’s given.
  • The first and the last receive the same reward: eternal life.
  • In God’s community, everyone is equally loved and valuable.

5. Living It Out

  • Build relationships rooted in forgiveness, humility, and love.
  • Pursue reconciliation quickly and sincerely.
  • Serve one another—wash feet, not just hands.
  • Value unity over being right.

Key Takeaway:

Jesus values His community so much that He shed His blood to create it. Our role is to love, protect, and serve one another so that every member can thrive in faith.
